Chinese Animation 6: The Cowherds' Flute, Landscapes, Grapple Between Snipe And Clam (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Taiwan Version)
This collection contains three classic award-winning Chinese animated shorts produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio: The Cowherds' Flute (1963), Landscapes (1988), and Grapple Between Snipe And Clam (1983). All three shorts use fluid animation inspired by traditional Chinese watercolor painting. Helmed by legendary Chinese animator Te Wei (The Proud General), the 1963 short The Cowherds' Flute (a.k.a. The Cowboy's Flute) is a classic in Asian animation. This delightful dialogue-free short is about a young flute-playing cowherd who falls asleep under a tree, and dreams that his water buffalo has run away. His search for the buffalo brings him to a valley of otherworldly beauty where he must use music to find his trusty friend again. Also directed by Te, Landscapes (a.k.a. Feeling from Mountain and Water and Love of Mountain and River) resembles a landscape watercolor painting in motion. The gentle story about the encounter between a poor elderly scholarly and a young girl again contains no dialogue, relying instead on the sounds of nature and guqin music. Directed by Hu Jinqing, Grapple Between Snipe And Clam (a.k.a. The Fight Between the Snipe and the Clam) animates the classic Chinese proverb about a snipe and a clam locked in a duel of attrition. When the snipe comes pecking, the clam shuts his shell on the snipe's beak, leaving them stuck in their positions. While they grapple, a p

Crows Zero (DVD) (Premium Edition) (Japan Version)
Prolific maverick director Miike Takashi certainly kept the masses happy in 2007 with the release of three high-profile ready-made cult films. Sukiyaki Western Django and Like a Dragon both had enough Miike magic to spare, but it's Crows Zero (a.k.a. Crows - Episode 0) that comes out on top of the heap as the auteur's most commercially successful film to date. Thanks to his extreme themes and even more extreme presentation, Miike alienates as much as he attracts, but he's got a legitimate box office hit on his hands with Crows Zero. Based on Takahashi Hiroshi's bestselling manga Crows, Crows Zero takes Miike to familiar territory - high school gang violence - and he cuts through the subject matter at high-octane speed for a stylized, action-packed, and entertaining schoolyard brawl of a movie. Delving into the hyper-stylized world of feuding high school gangs, Crows Zero actually takes place before the events of the manga (hence the title), setting up the origins and rivalries of the iconic characters. Other than the avid fanbase that already exists for the manga, Crows Zero gets some extra box office pull with the casting of heartthrobs Oguri Shun (Kisaragi) and Yamada Takayuki (Train Man) as the lead delinquents. Oguri, who also featured in Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django, continues to impress as one of Japanese cinema's most talented young stars, while Yamada Takayuki leaves behind t
