Many Hong Kong cinema fans were introduced to veteran actor Di Lung through his role opposite Chow Yun Fat in John Woo's seminal 1984 crime drama, A Better Tomorrow. But longtime fans know that his career stretches even further back to the late 60s. In 1968, Di Lung caught attention of soon-to-be legendary director Chang Cheh who cast him alongside star Jimmy Wang Yu in Return of the One Armed Swordsman. Di Lung's winning good looks and natural athleticism soon brought him fame as a martial arts movie star at Shaw Brothers studio. In the succeeding years, he made a variety of memorable films for the venerable production company, including such martial arts classics as The Water Margin, The Blood Brothers, and Duel of the Fists. Having earned a reputation as a major box office draw, Di Lung sought to change his image and spread his wings as an actor, taking on more modern, socially relevant roles. Thanks to his early success, his standing within the movie community was high enough that Shaw Brothers studio allowed him to make his feature length directorial debut with Young Lovers on Flying Wheels! Released in 1974, the film features Di Lung in a starring role, as he trades in the wuxia-style action that typified his early films in favor of a modern day action/romance flick!
