The Sun Also Rises (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
After a seven-year directing hiatus, renowned Mainland actor and filmmaker Jiang Wen returns with his long-awaited third directorial feature, The Sun Also Rises. Where Jiang's acclaimed 1994 debut film, In the Heat of the Sun, is often said to be a reflection of the director's youth, 2007's The Sun Also Rises is a story that only an older and wiser Jiang could tell. Reportedly briefly banned from filmmaking in the Mainland after his second film, Devils on the Doorstep, screened at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival without government approval, Jiang sticks to his guns for the brilliant and beautiful The Sun Also Rises. Making use of an elliptical narrative with four overlapping threads, The Sun Also Rises opens in 1976 with the topsy-turvy lives of a harried young man (Jaycee Chan) and his seemingly crazed mother (Zhou Yun) in a quiet village in eastern China. The brigade leader of his village, the son is constantly tending to his mother's strange habits and disappearing routine, which hint of a story-laden past. In another part of China, university professor Liang (Anthony Wong) attracts the attentions of a seductive nurse (Joan Chen) and then a persistent mob when he gets accused of sexual harassment. He can only turn to friend Tang (Jiang Wen) for help. Seemingly unrelated lives begin to intersect in the past and present when Tang is sent to the young brigade leader's village for reform labor. Like his previous two features

Achilles and the Tortoise (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Taiwan Version)
After Takeshis' and Glory to the Filmmaker, acclaimed filmmaker Kitano Takeshi completes his idiosyncratic trilogy on artistic rumination and creative crisis with Achilles and Tortoise. More accessible and audience-friendly than his previous two essays, Achilles and the Tortoise is told in three acts, following the art and adventures of an ardent, but middling artist at different stages in his navel-gazing life. Mocking art while making it, Kitano himself painted the film's colorful artwork which delightfully parody the protagonist and modern art. Taking the film's title from Zeno's Achilles and Tortoise paradox positing that the fastest runner can never overtake the slowest, Kitano creates a fascinating character study full of offbeat humor, wry commentary, and self-absorbent reflection. The son of a wealthy businessman, Machisu (Yoshioka Reo) discovers his passion, or perhaps obsession, for art at a young age. After his father's bankruptcy and suicide, Machisu has to move in with his unwelcoming rural relatives, but that doesn't deter him from painting. In his teenage years, Machisu (Yanagi Yurei) engages in various off-the-wall artistic pursuits at art school, and meets his soulmate Sachiko (Aso Kumiko, Suite Dreams). In middle age, Machisu (Kitano Takeshi) and wife Sachiko (Higuchi Kanako, Memories of Tomorrow) stalwartly continue to chase after their lifelong passion and dreams. But at this point, one thing has become painfull

The Blue Bird (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
From G.T.O to Gokusen, Japan has no shortage of crowd-pleasers about eccentric, righteous teachers whipping troubled classes into shape, but The Blue Bird wraps its reforming teacher and misunderstood students storyline around the serious topic of school bullying. Based on award-winning author Shigematsu Kiyoshi's novel, The Blue Bird is set at a school in the aftermath of a school bullying tragedy, exploring the incident's lingering effects on the school and students. Playing teacher again after Dragon Zakura, popular actor Abe Hiroshi (Still Walking) cuts an unlikely hero as a stuttering teacher who is constantly ridiculed himself for his speech problems. Co-starring teen actor Hongo Kanata (Prince of Tennis, NANA 2), The Blue Bird is directed by Nakanishi Kenji, who was previously assistant director on A Hardest Night!!. With the start of a new school term, there is no longer any sign of Noguchi, the bullied student who attempted suicide, and everything seems to have returned to normal. But stuttering substitute teacher Murauchi (Abe Hiroshi) gives a swift kick to this guise of normalcy by bringing Noguchi's desk back to the classroom, and stammering "e;good morning"e; to his empty chair everyday. His gesture becomes a pointed and painful daily reminder to both the school staff and his troubled students, especially guilt-ridden Shinichi (Hongo Kanata) who participated in the torment of Noguchi.
